I read an interesting article in the Education Gazette (4th July/ Vol. 90 No. 12). I talks about how Tawa Intermediate have developed their e-portfolios. On page 6 there is check list describing what they have done to develop them. Its worth regarding. The link is:

This article on e-portfolios was interesting to read. The checklist for students, teachers and the school was a confirmation for me that we are on the right track with our Vardon e-portfolios.
ReplyDeleteInteresting article- I looked into the My Portfolio link and thought that the continuum from age 5 to 18 (on the powerpoint) was helpful. The following article was also very interesting with regards to the validity of "research". It also talks about the part the teacher plays in e-portfolio's effectiveness. Teachers will need to have confidence working in this area to make it effective. I imagine if a lot of the reflection and assessment pages are made into templates it will be far easier. ReplyDeleteI have related this article to my thoughts around how we not only embed the e-portfolio process , but link it to our 4 R's...
this article showed them inthe following ways...
1.Resourceful - " Teachers can use them in powerful ways with their students as well as to scaffold their own learning" and "e-portfolios are used to organise learning, record learning progress and showcase achievement – for students and teachers alike.”
2.Resilient - An e-portfolio allows learners (students and staff) to reflect and build on previous activities. This could include how a student dealt with a problem or processed new information on a given topic. Furthermore, teachers learning the process and sticking at it until they are able to use the e-portfolio process is essential. "Staff familiarity with e-portfolios gives them an appreciation of the rationale behind the process and direct experience of the most significant benefit to their students".
3.Reflection - Reflection allows learners to think and analyse what they have been taught to gain an understanding that learning is self-determined and controlled and able to be applied in future activities for improved outcomes
4.Relationships - “ The digital portfolio is easy to access at home, and there are no books to forget, or lose...you can show parents what you’ve been learning at school that day.” Plus... " Individual users and even institutions can manage portfolios in which they create and collect artefacts that they want to share with peers, family, friends, teachers or stakeholders. They can also collaborate on online projects, gather their findings and then easily transfer the results into their own portfolio spaces. Achievement evidence, records of skills and competencies gained can be collected and presented."
